It’s been a hell of a couple weeks. I’ve been professionally violated by security and process auditors repeatedly over the span of the last few weeks, experienced one of the most exhausting on-call shifts ever last week, and have been running around in a seemingly endless state of tired and really annoyed for most of the month of October.

Since I haven’t had a chance to write much recently, I’m going to attempt to make up for it by directing you to the blogs of a couple people who have.

Drew’s Walkabout Blog

I’ve known Drew virtually for at least several months. Maybe longer; my sense of time has always been a little screwy. In any case, he’s a pretty amazing guy, and meeting him in person at this year’s Burning Man was definitely one of the high points of my trip.

Recently he’s been doing a trek to various fascinating parts of the globe and documenting them in his always very intelligent, insightful way, and I’ve really enjoyed keeping up with his travels. He’s also one hell of a photographer and his legs look amazing when he wears a skirt, but don’t tell him I said that.

World Wide Jeb

If you’re into queer, beer-swilling, Aussie metalheads, I have some good news: one actually exists. If you’ve ever followed that filtercore link at the bottom of the page you’ve already been introduced to the author of World Wide Jeb. He’s just started the latest incarnation of his blog, but I think I can guarantee it’ll be worth reading; Jeb is, without exaggeration, one of the most consistently hilarious writers I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. I have to be extremely drunk and have someone spin me around ten times and point me at a cliff before I get one-tenth as funny as Jeb is on an off day, and I’ll never look as good in a purple mohawk as he does. I secretly hate him for all of that, but he’s a great read anyway.

I was half-watching the news the other night when I heard a blurb for an upcoming story about a guy who shot pictures of unsuspecting people on San Francisco commuter trains. After the initial “oh shit, they’re on to me,” I realized it was someone else’s site they were talking about.

Jameth, apparently, has been covering the Muni trains while I’ve been busy on BART.

Three of my favorite places in San Francisco to see live bands. If I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be Slim’s — not for any practical reasons, but because it’s the first place I saw a live gig after moving out here from L.A.

• foosic - The Living Music Database

  Last.fm-like music tracking database, minus the social features.

I’ve been using foosic for a while now. Like Last.fm, it keeps a record of everything you listen to via a plug-in in your music player (in my case, foobar2000).

It’s very no-frills compared to Last.fm, and doesn’t really do much at this point other than add your tracks to a database. It allows you to see what songs, artists, albums, and genres you and other people are playing, as well as a history of what you’ve fed to it.

I think it’s got some potential, given the amount and quality of data they’re collecting, but in its current state I can’t honestly say it’s useful for a whole lot yet.

I’ve been playing with del.icio.us the last couple days… sort of a semi-collaborative online bookmark thingie, if you’re not familiar with it already. It has a feature that’ll post whatever you’ve bookmarked that day to your blog, so I figured I’d try it out — thus the couple links above.

I might have just deleted it and shut the feature off, if it weren’t for the first of the two links. Playing the Possum is a blog consisting of fiction written by a 19-year-old guy named Aaron Stein from Portland, Oregon, and I found it very well-written and fascinating as hell. He writes short vignettes there that range from poignant to disturbing, and it’s one of very few blogs I’ve ever wanted to read all the way back to the beginning. Check it out if you get the chance.

As for the second link… I’d rather not start singing the praises of a site that provides one of the most comprehensive databases of SNMP MIBs I’ve ever run across. People fall asleep when I do things like that.

I’ve been told I can be a little obsessive. I suppose there is some truth to that; when I find something I like, I tend to latch onto it pretty hard.

My latest Internet obsession is Last.fm, a site that tracks what kind of music you listen to, and recommends other music you might like. It’s also a social network, with groups that bring together people with similar interests (musical and otherwise), and allows you to do things like recommend music to other users, stream MP3s you or other users have been listening to, and a whole lot of other music-related stuff.

It’s been sucking up a lot of my time lately. I’ve been digging through the site discovering new bands that are popular with people who like the same kind of music I like. I’ve started up a group for Queer Rockers that’s just starting to gain some momentum. I’ve (virtually) met quite a few people with whom I’ve had countless conversations, about music and just about everything else.

I’m finding it really addictive. Look me up if you drop by. You’ll find me as IMTrick there. Just don’t give me any crap if you find out I’ve been listening to a lot of Tom Jones again lately.
